Identity Access Management Campus Essentials Workshop

  • Read more about Identity Access Management Campus Essentials Workshop

Identity access management should be one of the most important component in a Campus IT infrastructure. It allows teachers and students to access in house IT services as well as many world wide on line educational services using their own campus credentials that it is usually known as Single Sing On (SSO) access.

Most of the local campuses are now doing their own identity access management at least to get access to the LEARN Zoom. However it is yet to be assured that it is being used for many other services available around the world.

LEARN had two workshops recently,
1. Eduroam workshop
2. Deployment of IPv6 in Campus network workshop

NOC meeting 2017 (01 day) is to review the progress you have made and to share your experience of above two. Each institute are expected to do a 10 minute presentation of the same.

By definition, the network monitoring is the use of a system that constantly monitors a computer network for slow or failing systems and that notifies the network administrator in case of outages via email, pager, SMS or other alarms. LEARN believe that no institute can run a better network without having a monitoring system. It is a basic requirement for every institute to have a monitoring system.

On the other hand system admin should be able to constanly measure the real network bandwidth and it performance to make sure that the each segments of network has no bottle necks.

The two days workshop covers all essentials of network monitoring and measurement needed in a Campus network.

The Graphical User Interface (GUI) of an Operating System specifically like in Linux flavor (Ubunutu, Debian, CentOS, etc) is much easier to learn than the other none-GUI interfaces, and it can serve as a starting point for learning the system. For non-programmers, the GUI is the only interface available. The GUI is also much easier to use than the programmatic interfaces, since it is easier to point-and-click on buttons than it is to write and debug code.

However, when you came to deal with much customizable application usually used for network services specifically for service running on research and education networks, you may not longer survive with pointing-and-clicking on buttons on attractive GUI. One of the major disadvantages of using any GUI is that if it does not have the functionality to do what you want it to do, then you are simply stuck. Therefore you must have to look what is happening deep inside or behind what you have seen in a nice GUI.

For the last two years, LEARN Internet access bandwidth was at 1.5Gbps. However, LEARN has recently upgraded its Internet access bandwidth to 7Gbps in total. This includes 2Gbps from Sri Lanka Telecom and 5Gbps from Dialog Axiata. The upgrade was done in few steps. It was first upgraded to 2Gbps at he end of last year and then 2Gbps from Dialog added to it on February 2016. 3Gbps from Dialog added again mid of May 2016 by making it 7Gbps in total.

Availability of Internet access has now been increased because of LEARN resilience for Internet access using multiple Internet Service Provides.

In parallel to above upgrades, institutional bandwidths to LEARN network have also been upgraded. Main universities namely University of Peradeniya, University of Moratuwa, University of Keleniya and University of Sri Jayawardanapura have been upgraded to 1Gbps, 1Gbps, 800Mbps and 700Mbps respectively. The seventh video-conference event of the SERENE video conference series was a historic event in that it was the first South Asian Global Development Learning Network (GDLN) event to be bridged through an MCU in South Asia.

The video conference was was bridged through the LEARN MCU in Colombo operated from the LEARN Network Operations Center in Kandy, Sri Lanka, and where possible the sites were connected through the TEIN3 links at between 1.5 and 4 Mbps using High Definition (HD) codecs and cameras. This was a first for LEARN and a first for GDLN in South Asia, and it demonstrated to the participants the benefits of using NRENs and regional REN links for improving the quality of interactivity of international discussions.

Quoted below are some comments from the participants about the quality of the experience:

    • Read more about LEARN video conferencing facilities upgraded

Recently, video conferencing facilities of LEARN received a major upgrade through the financial support of the IRQUE project, a World Bank assisted project.

Under this upgrade, LEARN received a state of the art Video Conferencing Bridge (MCU) which enables connection of twelve sites with high-definition video (HD -720p). Universities of Colombo, Kelaniya, Moratuwa, Ruhuna, Sri Jayewardenapura, Visual & Performing Arts, Uva Wellassa, and Wayamba, LEARN Office in Kandy, and the IRQUE Project Office in Nugegoda also received high-definition video conferencing units and 40" LCD displays.

The new facilities supplement the high-definition video conferencing facilities previously provided to the universities of Eastern, Jaffna, Peradeniya, Sabaragamuwa, South Eastern, the UGC and the Ministry of Higher Education, also under the financial support of the IRQUE Project.

The new facilities will enhance activities such as remote teaching and remote participation at meetings, saving not only fuel, but also time that would otherwise be wasted in traveling.

LEARN connects to academic Internet via TEIN3

    • Read more about LEARN connects to academic Internet via TEIN3

The much anticipated connectivity to the Academic Internet through the TEIN3 network was established on April 1, 2010. LEARN is now connected by an IPLC (International Private Leased Circuit) of bandwidth 45Mbps to the Mumbai POP of the TEIN3 network.

TEIN3 connectivity provides high-quality, congestion-free network access to academic and research institutions worldwide. This connectivity is provided free of charge to all institutions connected to the LEARN network.

This is a major milestone for LEARN, as this is our first link to the Academic Internet as well as our first direct international link. Although LEARN has been in operation for approximately two decades, up to now we were only connected to the commodity Internet through local commercial Internet service providers.
